It was later calculated that this humanoid skeleton must have stood at least 8 feet tall.
"There has thus been revealed a very interesting situation that prevailed at some time or another, in the physical make-up of a race is reflected in the massive remains that have been recovered," the newspaper wrote, "and which are indisputable of a giant type of humanity that is bewildering to those of this generation."
The skull had broken into a few pieces, but when held in place, it easily fit over a man's head "as to shield the features like unto a perfect mask. The bones of the legs likewise (were) of greater length and heavier than any today."
The thought that this skeleton might have been some type of large primate is discounted by the "finding of a handful of beads, which archaeologists trace to the Toltec period."
According to scholars: "The Toltec civilization flourished in central Mexico between the 10th and mid-12th centuries AD. continuing the Mesoamerican heritage left to them by the earlier Olmec, Teotihuacano, Maya and others, the Toltecs would build an impressive capital at Tollan and, ultimately, pass on that heritage to later civilizations such as the Aztecs, who regarded the Toltecs as a great and prosperous civilization, even claiming descent from this once great civilization."
The idea that "there were giants in the land" is difficult for skeptics. The idea that there were giants in our land less than a millennium ago is jaw-slackening for nearly everyone.
This also happens to be circa the time that Native Americans took to cliff dwelling. This has not gone unnoticed by researchers of giants in North America. Scientists have never definitively answered the mystery as to why the Indians took to the cliffs. IF there were giant humans lurking about, that might well be a definitive reason to grab the children and dwell on a cliff.
The Story of the Fight at Battle Flat, June 3rd, 1864, in Yavapai county, AZ. Five prospectors faced several dozen Apaches.
"Hemando de Alarcon (for whom the street in Prescott is named) set sail with two ships up the coast, transporting the baggage and supplies for the soldiers. The original plan called for Alarcon and the army to keep in frequent touch and to rendezvous at suitable harbors along the coast. So when the army reached the province of Senora, a force under Don Rodrigo Maldonado set out to find the harbor and scan the horizon for Alarcon’s ships. Maldonado sighted no ships, but he did return with an Indian who stood so tall as to astonish the Spaniards.
"Pedro de Castaneda, who accompanied Coronado and later wrote the most complete and factual history of the expedition, records this unusual event as follows: “Don Rodrigo Maldonado, who was captain of those who went in search of the ships, did not find them, but he brought back with him an Indian so large and tall that the best man in the army reached only to his chest. It was said that other Indians were even taller on the coast.
"Soon after this, while still trying to establish contact with Alarcon, Captain Melchior Diaz came across another tribe of giants. Taking twenty-five of his “most efficient men” and some guides, Diaz struck out toward the north and west in search of the seacoast and the ships. “After going about 150 leagues,” reports Castaneda, “they came to a province of exceedingly tall and strong men–like giants ” According to Castaneda, these huge Indians went about mostly naked.
“They . . . live,” he adds, “in large straw cabins built underground like smoke houses, with only the straw roof above ground. They enter these at one end and come out at the other. More than a hundred persons, old and young, sleep in one cabin. When they carry anything, they can take a load of more than three or four hundredweight on their heads. Once when our men wished to fetch a log for the fire, and six men were unable to carry it, one of these Indians is reported to have come and raised it in his arms, put it on his head alone, and carried it very easily.”
What happened to the Sycamore Creek specimens? It was reported that the skull and bones were kept in the possession of the work crew leader, Conductor C.W. Corbin. As far as the beads go: "These precious ornaments were kept by the Mexican laborers, and cannot be secured. Mr. Corbin, however, verifies the discovery made, and at the time did not appreciate what their possession meant, else would have secured the lot."
The road crew finished its work and left. No other investigative diggings were made. It seems that if proponents wished to find a specimen of this kind in the 21st century, Sycamore Creek where the old Verde railway passed over might be a good candidate.
